How can I setup VLAN IDs on 82579V?

An automatic installation of the driver package from Intel fails:

But upon manual extraction there are several folders under "Wired_driver_27.6_x64\Wired_driver_27.6_x64\PRO1000" upon extraction:

  • NDIS63
  • NDIS64
  • NDIS65
  • NDIS68
  • W11
  • WS2022

I found out that the NDIS65-driver, which is still using of the old version of the "Intel(R) PROSet for Windows* Device Manager"-drivers, according to the website Overview of NDIS versions, is for Windows 10 version 1511, but also the latest one for 82597V.

But the "Intel(R) PROSet for Windows* Device Manager"-drivers stopped working with Windows 10 version 1809 according to the included readme.txt.

I suspect that this is the reason why the Intel® PROSet doesn't find any compatible adapter:

But without its included "Intel® PROSet for Windows PowerShell* software" I won't be able to setup VLAN IDs for the onboard-adapter beginning with Windows 10 version 1809 anymore as described in the article How-to Video: Create VLANs in Windows® 10 Using PowerShell*  .

 

I didn't figure out what Administrative Tools for Intel® Network Adapters's role exactly is, but it includes only virtual adapters it seems and just installs without any notable difference.

Does anybody know good advice on how to setup VLAN IDs on this adapter?

  2. What is the brand and model of your board/system?
  3. Is it working fine before?
  4. Did you upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 because the driver that you provided is for Windows 8.1?

here the answers to the list of questions:

  1. Are you using an onboard/embedded 82579V or is it a PCIe card?
    It's an onboard 82579V.
  2. What is the brand and model of your board/system?
    ASUS P8Z77-V DELUXE
  3. Is it working fine before?
    I can't tell, since I did not try before. But I think I can remember the VLAN-tab from the device-manager when the "Intel(R) PROSet for Windows* Device Manager" was still working until it changed with Windows 10 version 1809.
  4. Did you upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 because the driver that you provided is for Windows 8.1?
    The title of the linked webpage states "Intel® Network Adapter Driver for Windows® 10". So no, plus it was a clean Windows 10 Professional install.

Hope you can resolve the issue.

Hello Mr. L.,

the second link refers to "Intel® Advanced Network Services", which is part of "Intel® PROSet for Windows* Device Manager" which isn't supported beginning from Windows 10 version 1809 anymore, at which point the first link comes into play.

Here it says that the "Intel® PROSet Adapter Configuration Utility" needs to be installed instead, which is installed as part of the driver package.

So under the first link "Windows® 10 Support for Intel® Ethernet Adapters" is another sublink called "List of Discontinued Retail Intel® Ethernet Adapters" which doesn't apply to my onboard-device 82579V, since it's not a retail-item.

In other words, the information under that first link in your most recent reply applies to my case: "If you're running Windows® 10 Version 1809 (RS5), you need to install Intel LAN software v23.5 or newer. ".

So when I click on the accompanying link Intel® Ethernet Software 23.5 Release Information  and click on the following link Complete Driver Pack here there's a page called Intel® Ethernet Adapter Complete Driver Pack version 27.6.1 (Latest), which I didn't noticed yet.

Here are the results of an attempt to install it:

  1. I completely removed the "Intel(R) 82579V Gigabit Network Connection" and ticked the checkbox for the removal of the driver software.
  2. Then I clicked on Autorun.exe, which opened the following window:

  3. I click on "Install Drivers and Software" and the result is the following message:

  4. When I check the contents of the compressed-file, they're the same as the previous ones in my first post, with the exception of this complete package also including Linux-, BSD-drivers.

Again the following folders are included:

  • NDIS63
  • NDIS64
  • NDIS65
  • NDIS68
  • W11
  • WS2022

Of these folders, there should be a driver for the onboard-device included in the NDIS68-folder called e1d, e1r or e1s as described in the Intel® Ethernet Controller Products 27.6.1 Release Notes:

But all of these files via manual driver-selection don't list a 82579V-device. The newest driver that does is located in folder NDIS65, which doesn't work for latest Windows-versions regarding VLANs and is called e1c.

I suspect someone has forgotten to include the NDIS68-drivers for the 82579V-device since it's still supported, but not listed inside the folder.

Can you confirm this on your end please?

Thank you for providing the SSU logs. I will have this issue checked by our Engineers so that we can provide a recommendations. However, let me also set the expectation that since the network card is onboard, we may also advise you to contact the manufacturer of the board for further assistance.

Upon further checking it is best to contact the motherboard manufacturer Asus because our support is limited since you are using an Original Equipment Manufacturer(OEM) on-board Ethernet controller. It would still be best for you to get in touch with them for further support since they have customized drivers and software to enable or alter features on your system. They are in best position where you can seek assistance so you will not lose features or customizations of the Ethernet controller. 

 

And also, base on our Supported Operating Systems for Intel® Ethernet Controllers (LOM), the controller only supports Inbox driver for Windows 10 which the Intel® PROSet for Windows* Device Manager and Intel® Advanced Network Services (Intel® ANS) driver for teaming and VLANS aren't included.
