Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered

Hi. I know this question has been asked many times, but many are unanswered. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545, Window 7 64 bit. Just yesterday, my laptop kept blacking out, freezes and then unfreeze and this message would pop up saying, "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered. Display driver Intel Graphics Accelerator Drivers for Windows XP(R) stopped responding and has successfully recovered." It keeps happening around every 15-30 minutes. Sometimes, it totally blacks out. Other times, it unfreeze but the windows are blank. Someone please help me. The display adapter I have is Mobile Intel (R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family." Some people said online to update it and that might fix the problem. I went to the Intel website and updated the lastest one given, but the problem is still here. I've restored my laptop to a certain restore point, but still did not solve the problem. Suggestions and ideas? Thank you a head of time.

I, too, have the same problem as the others. So far, this has only happened while playing a specific game.

The message I get refers to the Intel Graphics for Windows XP, whereas I am running Windows 7 64-Bit.

I have provided you with the DXDIAG Report below. In previous posts, you mentioned that a current driver would need to be uninstalled before a possible new(er) one is installed.. Is that done through Device Manager -> Driver Properties -> Uninstall Driver?

I 'think' I have the most updated OEM Drivers, but I am not 100% certain.

I appreciate any assistance you may be able to provide with this matter.

Hi Nic,

The link above led to an installer that only installed an Intel Turbo Boost. It has not, however, stopped the driver from crashing and recovering. Any other suggestions?

Hmm.. that link should have downloaded the driver, at least that's what that particular download is for! I would contact Dell* and see if they can provide you the driver download for that file since their website isn't doing it properly. It's for driver version 8.15.10.2345.

In the meantime, you can try out download for it and see if it fixes your issue as well. Keep in mind though, this is an Intel® generic driver, and you may not have full functionality with it. I have the same problem with a twist. My laptop has dual graphics, an Intel integrated graphics card and an nVidia discrete card for power savings. The graphics card used changes depending on the global program and power settings. I'm having the same "Intel graphics card stopped responding and recovered" error message at times, even when I'm using programs I've set for nVidia card such as Sketchup and Navisworks Freedom. I've downloaded the latest driver from Intel website last week, but it has not helped with the problem. Below is my DxDiag report.

@Ihsan: Hi Ihsan, thanks for providing that information. I just checked your OEM's support site for your product, and it doesn't appear that they provide Intel® driver support for graphics. However, your dxdiag shows that you're using the default BIOS that came on the system, perhaps an update will resolve the issue. And I have the latest driver from Toshiba. None of the drivers that I have been able to install has made a difference. At one time there was a generic driver that worked a little better, but some things wouldn't run. My Uncle thought that wiping everything out and doing a clean install of 7 might work. When I changed from Vista to 7 I had the upgrade disk and installed it by all recommended settings. Though he has never heard of the problems that we all are having.

Unfortunately, updating the BIOS did not really help. I'm still getting "graphics driver stopped to response and recovered" messages, albeit not as frequent. I'll see if there is a way to disable the integrated graphics and make the discrete GPU the go-to graphics card.

@sabrina: In order to install that driver, you'll need to uninstall the one you currently have. To do that, open Device Manager -> Display Adapters -> Right click your current driver and select "Uninstall" - if/when prompted, choose to delete the files so that it doesn't re-install them immediately afterwards (automatically). Then try running the driver install again.

@Ihsan: I would contact your OEM to see if they provide a switchable graphics driver. If you have a system running both a discrete card & onboard, you'll be best served by one of these.

First thing, I'm not sure where you got your driver, but you might consider either using the latest Asus* driver for your model, located here under 'VGA -> Intel' http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/K52JC/# support_Download_30 ASUS - - ASUS K52JC

Hey Nic,

Unfortunately, this only helped partially (it occurs less often), however, I noticed a couple of things (don't know if related).

I remember updating my BIOS last year, but went on to BIOS itself to check. It reported the current platform as being 216, updated on 2012. But I re-updated it just to reassure myself. It did not show up on dxdiag though. So my BIOS isn't the problem.

I tried your latest driver first (15.22.57.64.2827), it still crashed. Went on to downgrade to the one provided by ASUS (V8.15.10.2202), same thing. However, now it does not tell that the driver had stopped responding and recovered, but it still behaves as if it did: when I launch the game, it flashes a couple of times as if trying to re-start. If I don't close the program, I eventually get a BSOD. I can attach the minidump files created after each BSOD if needed.

I am currently using the driver provided by my manufacturer and it is up-to-date. Any ideas?
