Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered

Hi. I know this question has been asked many times, but many are unanswered. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545, Window 7 64 bit. Just yesterday, my laptop kept blacking out, freezes and then unfreeze and this message would pop up saying, "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered. Display driver Intel Graphics Accelerator Drivers for Windows XP(R) stopped responding and has successfully recovered." It keeps happening around every 15-30 minutes. Sometimes, it totally blacks out. Other times, it unfreeze but the windows are blank. Someone please help me. The display adapter I have is Mobile Intel (R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family." Some people said online to update it and that might fix the problem. I went to the Intel website and updated the lastest one given, but the problem is still here. I've restored my laptop to a certain restore point, but still did not solve the problem. Suggestions and ideas? Thank you a head of time.

Hey guys, i also have the same problem. When i play world of warcraft or play a youtube video i get the error all the time :

"Display Driver has stopped working and has recovered"

My laptop is Lenovo T61 and my specs are :

CPU TypeMobile DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo T7500, 2200 MHz (11 x 200)System Memory

4022 MB (DDR2 SDRAM)

3D AcceleratorIntel GMA X3100Video AdapterMobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family (384 MB)

I tried changing desktop resolution. I tried changing game resolution, i uninstalled and installed different drivers a lot of times.

Here is my report :

Hi nic,

You have been really helpful with everyone so far, so I am going to give this a try. For the past month or so, I have been receiving the following error:

It occurs when I watch videos on any browser (YouTube, HBO, vimeo, etc) or when I try to listen to any audio that uses a flash-based player embedded on the web (e.g. podcasts). The video locks up, staggers, the audio starts to sound robotic, and then the browser/computer completely freezes and I can't even move the mouse cursor. If I wait it out from 10-45 seconds, it will unfreeze and stop staggering and the video works again. Another few minutes later (or maybe even after I have watched 2 or 3 short YouTube videos with no problem) it locks up again. Only once out of every 5-8 crashes will I actually receive the error message pictured above. When that happens, the screen goes black, then flashes back on and the windows taskbar turns pale before going back to its usual color after the error message appears.

Believing that this was to do with either Firefox/Waterfox or Shockwave Flash (Flash had an update not long ago), I have updated my browser and all plugins to the latest versions. This happened out of the blue only a month ago and I have had this computer since 2010. I followed other tips from Adobe Flash troubleshooters that include turning off hardware acceleration, but this does not help.

I am using Windows 7 x64. Computer details: Acer Aspire 5740-5513; Intel core i3 330M (2.13Ghz 1066Mhz); Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD up to 1754 MB; 4GB memory, 320GB HD

I am currently using the original driver from Acer for the Intel display adapter, version 8.15.10.1995. When I visit the Acer website for updates, that is the latest one. Thinking the driver may have been corrupted, I installed it fresh from the Acer eRecovery software a few days ago, but it has not helped.

I ran the Intel Driver Update Utility you recommended in an earlier reply, and it provides this update: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=21776 Download Center. I am posting here first because I am reluctant to update the driver without knowing it is the right one. About 6 months and also one year after I first bought my computer, I was prompted to install a new Intel graphics driver. I was getting some ghosting on screen fonts, so both times I installed the driver to try and fix that, and both times the new driver caused my screen to shrink down to a small image in the middle of the monitor and I had to boot in safe mode to restore the computer to an earlier date. (Since Win 7 SP1, the ghosting issue is gone.) I'd prefer not to go through that again.

Here is my dxdiag:

@Kurnia: By RO2, are you referring to Ragnarok Online* 2? You might consider updating your chipset driver as well; http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/Chipset/Chipset_Intel_9.1.1.1025_W7x86_A.zip?acerid=634163107887838252&Step1=Netbook,%20Chromebook&Step2=Aspire%20One&Step3=AOD255&OS=702&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=PA_6 here's a link for that.

Give that a try and let me know how it goes.

@Fran: It looks like you're using an outdated driver, and its also sayings its for Windows* XP while you're using Windows* 7... here's a link to an updated driver that should work with your system. Let me know if you still have problems afterwards; http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22521&lang=eng Download Center

@Deji: There are still some more things we can do to try to improve your performance Let's start here at the support page for your system; http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers

First, try updating the Chipset driver on your system; http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/Driver/Chipset/Chipset_Intel_8.15.10.1808_W7x86W7x64_A.zip?acerid=633900594686078479&Step1=Notebook,%20Ultrabook&Step2=Aspire&Step3=Aspire%205738&OS=701&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=PA_6 Here's a link for that.

Second, try updating the BIOS for your system; http://global-download.acer.com/GDFiles/BIOS/BIOS/BIOS_Acer_1.34_A_A.zip?acerid=634327419282986804&Step1=Notebook,%20Ultrabook&Step2=Aspire&Step3=Aspire%205738&OS=701&LC=en&BC=Acer&SC=PA_6 Here's the link for that.

Next, try updating the Microsoft* .NET Framework; http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/cc378097 Here's the link for that.

@Carl: We just released a new driver for your system, give it a try and let me know if the issue persists. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=22628&lang=eng Download Center

@I7ooler: Can you provide the full model name of your Toshiba* Satellite? It should be something like A660-XXXX

Thanks everyone,

Nic,

I installed the newest driver like you said, the problem still persists.

I called Lenovo technical support and they had me uninstall RapidBoot and perform a memory test. Did both, and the problem still persists

Thanks 17ooler. I was going to find the support website for your product so I could recommend a driver for you to test... however they don't seem to have one for your system that I can find.

We'll try going the Microsoft* .NET route though. I would like you to check your systems .NET framework version. Do this by following the steps below:

1. Open Control Panel

2. Open Programs and Features

3. Choose Turn Windows features on or off from the left tab

4. Hit Yes if UAC prompts you for permission

5. Find the folder Microsoft.NET Framework %Version Number% (Note the version number!)

6. Ensure that the checkbox is bubbled (checked is fine too, so long as it's not blank)

Let me know two things;

1. Was the checkbox empty?

2. What was the version # of .NET?

Thanks,

-Nic

Hi Nick,

The version number was 3.5.1.

The check box was bubbled/filled in (not checked)

When I expanded the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 folder though, the check boxes for the two subfolders were unchecked and unbubbled.

I am having this same problem on my Compaq Presario CQ71 with intel graphics card.

Would appreciate some help. Thanks

Ok. So I've encountered this problem too many times now. First using motherboard drivers, and now pure Intel's. My motherboard is MSI B75MA-E33. The CPU is i3-3220 with 2500 graphics of course. System is Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

Link to the 64-bit DxDiag: http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=UjfKW0bm http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=UjfKW0bm

Last time it occured, when I pressed ctrl+a in Photoshop in order to select whole image. But it seems to occur spontaneously, whenever it thinks "oh, maybe now". From one to several times per day.

After first few occurrences, I downloaded newest drivers from Intel site, uninstalled previous (from MSI site) and installed new ones.

In control panel it shows net framework version 3.5.1 (box filled). But I'm using Visual Studio 2012 so I know that I have 4.5. But I downloaded 4.5 installer, and made repair install, which ended with, what was prompted, a success. But the problem remains.

@kurnia: Does the issue still occur if you play the game in full screen mode?

@Mateusz: Update your BIOS first; (version 1.5) http://www.msi.com/product/mb/B75MA-E33.html# /?div=BIOS MSI Global – Motherboard - B75MA-E33

After that, update your Intel® Management Engine; (version 1349) http://www.msi.com/product/mb/B75MA-E33.html# /?div=Driver&os=Win8%2064 MSI Global – Motherboard - B75MA-E33

Then, re-install the driver released by your OEM* (version 2867) http://www.msi.com/product/mb/B75MA-E33.html# /?div=Driver&os=Win8%2064 MSI Global – Motherboard - B75MA-E33

When you do the driver install, before-hand, make sure that you completely uninstall your current display drivers (delete associated files when prompted).

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

-Nic
