Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered

Hi. I know this question has been asked many times, but many are unanswered. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545, Window 7 64 bit. Just yesterday, my laptop kept blacking out, freezes and then unfreeze and this message would pop up saying, "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered. Display driver Intel Graphics Accelerator Drivers for Windows XP(R) stopped responding and has successfully recovered." It keeps happening around every 15-30 minutes. Sometimes, it totally blacks out. Other times, it unfreeze but the windows are blank. Someone please help me. The display adapter I have is Mobile Intel (R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family." Some people said online to update it and that might fix the problem. I went to the Intel website and updated the lastest one given, but the problem is still here. I've restored my laptop to a certain restore point, but still did not solve the problem. Suggestions and ideas? Thank you a head of time.

I would verify that there is a 3rd party card installed in your system, and if so - update that card to the latest driver as well. I thought I'd give you an update on my position in case it is of use in sorting out somebody else. My problem was in not being able to totally remove previous drivers. When I made a mess of trying to update BIOS (part of another attempt to find a solution) I was left with no options other than to 'refresh' my computer. That has done the trick and I have had no problems since.

I find it odd that a clean install did not have the necessary effect and I can only guess that the W8 installation process searches for and uses previous drivers meaning that one is not left with only the latest driver and no residual files from previous ones.

The 'refresh' process does clear the drivers and only loads the Basic Microsoft Graphics. That enables one to download the new driver from scratch which appears to eliminate all problems. The following message appeared in a new icon on my desktop after the 'refresh':

Of course, if anybody else has no option but to take the 'refresh' route in W8, they should understand that all programmes/applications are lost and have to be reloaded just as in a clean install. Oddly, my personal files were retained though I would back them up anyway if I ever had to take the option again.

I could use some help here too... I used to play a game (Lord of the Rings Online) and i tried to play it again last night, but my laptop screen turns black and the same message "The display driver has stopped responding and has recovered" is showed. The problem is that i've played this same game for more than 1 year before with the same laptop and without problems. If somebody knows anything useful to solve this problem, i'd be grateful to know, there are a few specs of my laptop:

It's a LG490.

The driver of the Graphic's card is a generic one i've installed from the Intel's website.

@Cloud12: Can you post an updated copy of your dxdiag?

@ryanjrqwe: The system you have is out of date in several ways. Primarily it is because the CPU is quite a few years out of date. We have moved on to newer, better, faster, more powerful technology since the Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processors. Additionally, 4GB of RAM is a good amount for most things, but for gaming you are going to see significant performance improvements from something with 8GB+. However, your system is also running a 32-bit OS, you would want to upgrade to a 64-bit OS to take advantage of additional memory.

@flyingtigers9: A BSOD is a much more serious issue compared to our driver failing, and this might be a symptom of hardware failure on your system. I would contact your OEM if you are still experiencing BSOD's. However, in the meantime you can see if the issue might be related to our driver, and I would start by updating to our latest for your product. The date of the bios 0604 might be 8/15/13, but it is the latest one, so I can't update the bios any further. I have put in a ticket to Asus about the problem, but haven't heard anything yet. Wish they would update the bios for this board, they seem to have released new ones for their H81 and B85 lines.

OK, I am more convinced that this is a software/driver/bios issue than hardware. I let Furmark run at 1680x1050 for 20 minutes, while I ran a couple of Aida64 benchmarks like AES,FPU Julia and Mandel. Sure the cpu package temp got to 95C but there was no display driver crash or any other crash. I also browsed in FF a bit and tried playing a online video on TWiT. Sure the video didn't refresh very well because the gpu was being used at 100% but the driver didn't crash. Also played a local 1080p video and there was no crash. BUT, as soon as I stopped Furmark, and played the same TWiT video, almost immediately the display driver crashed and it takes online videos to black. I currently have Furmark closed and have gotten 3 driver crashes just using Firefox in the last 5 minutes.

Hello, I have the "driver stopped working and recovered" issue as well. I put together a i3-4330 with Asus H87M-e motherboard. I have tried everything, updating drivers, updated bios, added the TDR settings to registry, installing all windows updates. I have now clean installed windows 7 x64 with just Firefox, Antivirus and a media player, and I get the crashing either just playing a video, browsing or scrolling in a browser. I have altered RAM speed from 1600 9-9-9-24 to 1333 9-9-9-24 and still nothing helped. I have run stress tests and none of those cause the display driver to crash. I have bought a discrete graphics card, and when that is installed, I get no driver crashes. I have uninstalled the card and will attach DirectX output with only Intel Graphics HD4600 installed. One more thing, I have installed HWInfo64 to monitor voltages, and on the iGPU Voltage line, it reads 0V most of the time for HD4600. When the driver crash does occur, there is a voltage spike to 0.835V for iGPU, usage goes to 100%, there is a 5C spike in GPU temperature, but the Dynamic Memory Usage drops dramatically to near zero.

I have problems in Sony Vegas all version 10,11,12 in rendering. I start rendering and reaches 30% or 60% or 90% depend and appear black screen for 2 second and appear display drivers not responding and recovered and rendering loks and no continue.. I have laptop, please help me to fix problem:)

FYI: Using the HD4600 but with standard VGA driver on Win7x64 and I am NOT getting any crashes associated with the Intel graphics. Also, using HWInfo64, the iGPU voltage is at a steady 0.835V and running at full 1150MHz because there is no driver installed. So to me, it looks like the Intel driver (3186,3257, or 3304) all drop the voltage down to 0V on the iGPU, and maybe that crashes the driver. I have all PCIe power saving disabled also when I do have the driver installed.

I might have solved the issue. I noticed that running Furmark when clocks and voltage on the gpu core is higher and had no crash, so I figure let me adjust the integrated video voltage. First I put it to 0.835 using CPU Graphics Voltage Override set to Manual, which it seems to hit when the driver crashed, but in HWInfo, it was reading at 0.755 V and I still got the driver crash. So I upped it to 0.900 V, and it is reading a steady 0.820 V in HWInfo, but that seems to have made it more stable so I don't get the crash. I have successfully opened Quake and played some without a crash, and web browsed and played local and online video without a driver crash.

It looks like this Asus motherboard when set to Auto does not provide enough voltage to the onboard graphics in cpu.

@Duke975: I'm glad your issue appears to be resolved I would recommend still contacting your OEM though, since your BIOS revision/date was not properly populated in the dxdiag. It could be a sign of other issues down the road.

I have a Samsung ATIV 500T Smart PC with a "Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator" and no series number (i.e. Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 3150, 3600, etc.). Whenever I close the lid on my tablet (when it's docked to the Samsung keyboard that's made for it), or press the "sleep" button on the device, 9 times out of 10 when I open the lid or turn the device back on, it's unresponsive for several seconds, and once it comes back on, I receive a notification that my display driver has stopped responding and has successfully recovered. This has become a huge hassle and is extremely annoying. Since my GMA doesn't have a series number, I can't find the proper driver for it and check for an update. Please tell me how to fix this issue. Provided below is the info from my dxdiag.

They do not have any downloads listed though... I would suggest contacting them directly and ask where you are supposed to get your driver from. Usually it would be available on the support page for your product, but since it is not - it is something they will need to provide.

I apologize for not having a better solution for you - this particular product requires the customized driver provided by your OEM though, so it is not something we have control over.

Nic, this is a not a problem with the tablet OEMs. I have a ASUS VivoTab Smart, and this same problem started for me right after I upgraded to Windows 8.1. When you search the Microsoft forums a variety of tablets using the Atom Z2760 processor are having problems and have been having problems since the beta version. I did all the pre and post updates advised by ASUS for 8.1. With the multiple brands having problems, maybe this is a problem Intel needs to address? Please support those who buy products that contain Intel's brand name and do not disappoint us!
