Hello,
I just upgraded to Windows 8.1 today and I'm running into some issues. When I run GTA 4 (haven't tested any other games to be frank) - which ran fine before the update - it crashes after a while with a BSOD. The error message being:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (igdkmd64.sys)
This query in Google has led me to the information that the HD Graphics driver is crashing. The next thing I did was installhttps://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?lang=eng&DwnldID=23106 the latest HD Graphics drivers. This has not yet fixed the issue.
What I just noticed while writing this is that Hardware Info 64 does not recognize my Nvidia GPU. This could mean that GTA 4 is running on the HD Graphics GPU? So at this moment I'm reinstalling my Nvidia drivers.
So I reinstalled (clean install) the Nvidia drivers. I ran GTA4 which ran for a little while longer, but still throws a BSOD after a while.
In any case, this should ne be happening, right?
System:
Asus n56vz (notebook)
CPU: Intel Core i7-3615QE (including Intel HD Graphics 4000 (Ivy Bridge GT2))
GPU: GeFore GTX 650M
Chipset: Intel HM76 (Panther Point)

When updating to Windows 8.1 new hd4000 drivers were automatically installed. After this installation the internal display of my notebook is not working anymore. There is no picture shown on it (but the backlight does light up).
This happens not only within windows, but starts right from booting. VGA and HDMI output are working fine. When I look at the intel control panel it only sees 1 display which is the external one, the internal is not detected by the software.
I have tried to revert back to older drivers and even installed windows 7 on a second partition, all with no luck.
My system is an Asus N56VZ, i have atached my dxdiag to this post.
Regards,
Bram

Has there been a real solution found to for this problem? I have updated to the latest graphics drivers for both intel and NVIDIA and set NVIDIA to run any gaming programs and for whatever reason the intel driver keeps crashing my system. This has been happening for well over a month and frankly it's really pissing me off.

Good news, today In my windows 8.1 update today was another Intel driver update. It is dated 12/18/2013 and is version 10.18.10.3379.
I have been playing the game whish was BSODing for me ( Fall Out New Vegas in my case ) for about 4 hours now without an issue at all where before I couldn't got for more than a minute or two.
The issue may be fixed with this driver!

Like many of the people here, I am having the same issue. Specifically, it is with my wife's Asus Q550 laptop. Specifically she is getting crashes when she is playing Skyrim, and it's always with the Intel device driver file.
Like everyone else I have updated all the video drivers (running xx45 latest Intel and latest nVidia), latest drivers for all other devices, all current windows patches, applications up to date, etc. and same problems as everyone else.
If I can provide any additional information to help resolve this issue I would gladly do it.

Sorry for the other posts this is a TL/DR moment. But I think I have a workaround.
I have been receiving the above error in a BSOD at various points in both Rocksmith and Rocksmith 2014 on my Lenovo Y510p. My desktop PC with integrated Radion worked properly so I just thought it was a windows 8.1 issue. But it appears that is not the case.
igdkmd54.sys points to the Intel HD 4600 graphics card built into the chip set on the Lenovo y510p. For gaming and other High demand applications the Nvidia Optimus software is supposed to switch the graphics to the Geforce GT755m chipset. Apparently in rocksmith and some other games this does not happen and it triggers the BSOD when the Intel Driver flakes out.
Here is a potential work around solution that I got to work so far. The default global settings are Integrated Graphics and well the Intel HD 4600 while not terrible is not the GT755m
Step 1
Open the Nvidia control panel
Click on Manage 3D settings
Click on the Global Settings tab
under preferred graphics processor select "High Performance Nvidia processor".
Click apply
Step 2
Click on the Program Settings Tab
Click the Add button under select a program to customize Select Rocksmith 2014 or any other application that was causing the bluescreen.
Under preferred graphics processor select "High Performance Nvidia processor".
Click apply
A reboot may not be necessary but old habits die hard and I rebooted after making the above changes.
Repeat step 2 for any game that you are experiencing a problem with after changing step 1.
I was able to play for 3 hours with out any issues if anything changes I will figure out the solution and update this thread.

I tried MoPCTech's solution and this did not resolve the problem. My wife's machine still crashes several times a day while playing Skyrim. Normal usage of the laptop works fine, it seems to only happen when the nVidia 745 is running the game. There isn't a way in the bios to disable the intel card, so I can't test this. Hoping for a driver update to fix this issue soon.

Hi Matthew,
At this point the latest driver we have is the version 3345. In the case you have tested this already, I recommend you contacting the computer manufacture for them to provide a bios update and the graphics driver update.

I will reach out to ASUS (it's a ASUS Q550), but if you scour the interwebs you will find other people (like in this post) having the same problems we are. We had the issue with the drivers provided by ASUS as well, which is why I looked to upgrade them to fix it. It seems to be specific to the Intel 4600 with a integrated nVidia card. There is no way in the bios to disable the integrated Intel card. I suspect I could look at replacing RAM, but with all the posts above and different models of PC's (but similar configurations), it seems driver related. Not sure also why the Intel driver is crashing when the nVidia driver is the one driving the current game.

This is not only a Intel / nVidia issue... it happens on my friends Dell Computer and he's got an Intel/AMD combo on his one and he get issues when playing like :
- Warning about being low in memory.
- After a few alerts, a BSOD.
Note that we tried all your solution and seems to be related to Windows 8.1 + Intel + AMD. Three month and nobody found a clue about what happening there. Hopefully, mine with a 3D screen, don't have this issue, as long as the 3D screen make the HD graphic acceleration being deativated...
This is definately related to Intel HD Drivers. Not AMD, nVidia or the games by themselve.
Note a few games are not able to use the GPU because they don't see it.
Anyway, hope we'll have a fix... a day in the future !

A friend of mine who works in the IT industry tracked this down to the Intel Management Engine Interface driver being out of date. You might want to check your date on that driver. If your Intel Management Engine Interface driver is older than October 2013, it may cause problems with the other Intel drivers. Toshiba has not yet provided an update to the Intel Management Engine Interface driver, so those using Toshiba should stick to Windows 8 until an update is available.
My driver is found in Device Manager under System Devices -> Intel(R) Management Engine Interface -> Right Click -> Properties -> Driver -> mine is dated 7/2/2012
Hope that helps! :-}

Yup... I have a Toshiba laptop with 8.1 and I've been having this issue since I got my computer. However, before a prompt would pop up and if I closed that then the game would run fine. However, recently it's been BSODing without that prompt.
I've tried updating my drivers, but I can't. Either they aren't validated for my laptop (drivers from intel) or they're up to date (from Toshiba). I can't uninstall the intel drivers because they reinstall themselves. I can't downgrade to Windows 7 either because my laptop isn't able to do that.
So I'm pretty much screwed until either Intel or Toshiba get their act together? That's good to know...

Zigman1,
You can try the latest driver for your graphics controller. Here is the download link:
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3719&DwnldID=23639 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=3719&DwnldID=23639
If you get a notification message during the installation, it indicates that your computer manufacturer does not allow the installation of generic Intel video drives. You are required to install drivers from your computer manufacturer.
You may try to force the installation of Intel generic drivers by performing manual procedure, see here for instructions:

Here is the zip version of the video driver:

Hi Kevin,
I've tried installing the driver expressly and I got a notification about it not working. I also tried to manually install it through a zip, but that wasn't possible either.
Toshiba's version of the driver is at 10~ while yours is at 15~. Toshiba is way behind and I don't know if they plan on updating. If you could nudge them into a decision, that'd be great. What I've ended up doing is getting a second harddrive installed into my laptop. After a day of playing with it, I've managed to get it working while keeping my 8.1 hard drive.
Not a great solution, but it works. No BSOD on Win7 yet.
