dGPU Switch and Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel CPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070/GT 640M. The problem is, whenever you try to do some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which cause the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

• Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
• Opening Chrome-browser
• Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
• Opening system control panel
• Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
• Loading a new tab in Firefox

• Intel driver
• NVIDIA driver
• Chipset driver
• BIOS
• Firmware

The problem can be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Razer.The problem can be solved by either disabling Intel GPU, which forces the system to always work with NVIDIA, or disabling NVIDIA GPU. Both of them is not an option though, as if you disable Intel, not only you will drain the battery faster, but also some games will stop working. If you disable NVIDIA, then what is the point of buying a laptop with a discrete GPU?There is a also a workaround: configuring https://github.com/jobeid/TrayPwrD3 TrayPwrD3 to always work with NVIDIA in the backgound. This keeps the NVIDIA GPU alive but also drains battery faster. And there is no poaint in that as it renders Optimus useless!So, manufacturers have to come up with a fix.Thank you.

Sorry but I did not get the point of those videos you have posted.

There are no problem in the videos you have attached.

Our problem is:

You have Intel HD 630 + NVIDIA GTX 1060 laptop. You right click on desktop and the system freezes for a second. You click on battery icon, system freezes again. I saw no freeze and NVIDIA GPU in your videos...

But I really aprreciate Intel's approach to the topic. Al least you are trying to help unlike Microsoft.

Examples:

Right click -> display settings -> mouse freeze

Click on Battery tray icon -> mouse freeze

Open a PowerPoint file -> start slide show -> mouse freeze

Plus too many others to list.

All the above are one to two second freezes or stutters.

So far the only workaround (not solution) for me has been https://github.com/jobeid/TrayPwrD3 TrayPwrD3. Still waiting for some permanent fix. I'm starting to think this is a hardware problem on all laptops with this architecture.

Freezing on right-click fix is pretty simple. Type in search box "regedit" (open as an adminstrator). Head to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\ shellex\ContextMenuHandlers then delete both igfxcui and igfxDTCM. Voila! (It only affects righ-click menu intel entry).

BigTimeTA, the right click is already fixed with a recent Windows/Intel driver update. So your registry edit is unnecessary.

Unfortunately it did not fix my problem on Dell Inspiron 7577 (I7 7700HQ, GTX 1060 MaxQ). I had to sort it out this way. I think Max Q drivers only made things worse. however I still get micro lag when opening battery icon from taskbar or opening control panel. If you got a workaround you would be much appreciated.

This problem is not present when there is simply an intel driver, it appears only when you install the nvidia. Maybe intel driver conflict with nvidia driver.

Thank you for the answer provided, coolrecep, let me check, I will continue to look for a system with hybrid graphics (Intel + dedicated graphics adapter) to perform the tests and proceed accordingly looking for a solution.

This is a widespread issue and we are waiting for a fix for more than 6 months.
