dGPU Switch and Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel CPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070/GT 640M. The problem is, whenever you try to do some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which cause the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Here is a video demonstrating Display Setting Freeze:

Another video showing dGPU switch on a lot of simple tasks:

Another one:

We have tried updating every software possible, but no luck.

  • NVIDIA driver
  • Chipset driver

  • Firmware

The problem can be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Razer. The problem can be solved by either disabling Intel GPU, which forces the system to always work with NVIDIA, or disabling NVIDIA GPU. Both of them is not an option though, as if you disable Intel, not only you will drain the battery faster, but also some games will stop working. If you disable NVIDIA, then what is the point of buying a laptop with a discrete GPU?There is a also a workaround: configuring https://github.com/jobeid/TrayPwrD3 TrayPwrD3 to always work with NVIDIA in the backgound. This keeps the NVIDIA GPU alive but also drains battery faster. And there is no poaint in that as it renders Optimus useless! So, manufacturers have to come up with a fix.Thank you.

Hello folks,

Thank you for your patience while we investigated this further. I understand the frustrations caused by this issue and apologize for the inconvenience it may be bringing you. By now, most of you have installed our latest graphics driver (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27650 15.65.5.4982) and seen the right-click desktop issue resolved (and some other right-click stutters as well).

After implementing the code change, we noticed there were some remaining right-click stutters happening in various areas of the OS experience and that's what we've been investigating until now; we wanted to be very clear if we were still contributing to them. We've now concluded that we are not, we're only in the stack 1 millisecond which is acceptable and the remaining time is from other parties and the three others in the stack, to the best of my knowledge are aware, investigating, and treating this with high priority.

This concludes Intel's investigation so I'm now considering this thread closed, though Intel will remain in communication with the other parties to assist in any way we can should they desire.

Special thanks to coolrecep for reporting this and all the others helping with config details and testing so we could improve our drivers as quickly as possible. We value all of your contributions.

.:Bryce:.

As long there are processes for the dGPU, you have no Lags or freezes. This is only a Problem while the Intel Gpu works alone without any dGPU tasks!

If there is no early solution in the next few weeks, I will return the Notebook, an buy a Ryzen System, in hope there are not such problems.

This is a bit out of topic question but i've noticed that the balanced power plan is now gone from windows 1709? When i left click on the battery it says "Power Mode (plugged in) : better performance and the slider is in the middle of best battery life and best performance.

When on battery it reduces the brightness correctly and it says : Power mode (on battery): Better Performance and the slider is above the middle and closer to the best performance. Is it normal ? Shouldn't the slider be closer to best battery life when on battery ? Maybe i misunderstood something?

I have a dell inspiron 7567 i7 , 16gb , 1050ti

It could be something specific to your own device. But with 1709, yes, there are more power options B/C 1709 supports more CPU C-States.

BTW we ordered a Macbook Pro 13.3". Paying 1299 USD to a device with 8 GB of Non-Upgradable RAM and no discrete GPU, we felt really bad But at least it does not have those freeze issues

And I also think it's time that we get an update from Ronald_Intel and Bryce@Intel.

So it could be something specific for dell 7567 ?(although i havent installed a dell power manager software)

Regardimg macbooks i always found them overpriced but i ve installed them on my hp probook and i really liked their stability and simplicity. I also liked the terminal coming from archlinux

For those who are thinking to keep using the 1703.... there will come a day where you have to update. It's not like Windows XP, Windows 7.

It's Windows as a Service. You have no control... and disabling the wuauserv is going to just keep you sane for awhile, but slowly you'll be thinking about malware and attacks and you won't sleep well thinking of missing updates. haha.

Anyways, there's hope for a fix.. and we can be glad for coolrecep for bringing and publicizing the crap out of this stuttering issue to intel, microsoft, nvidia, etc.

I decided to test TrayPwrD3 yesterday and I noticed that it seems to wake up the notebook when in suspend mode. Twice I had to put windows in suspended mode because for no reason it "woke up" and only after closing the app, windows remained suspended. Has anyone else gone through this?

Check your network card under device management (Power Management TAB)

Be sure that you tick "Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer" is selected or just prevent completely the network card to wake the computer.

This is probably why your computer woke up.

For me (Razer Blade 7700HQ with GTX1060) Windows pushed some updates, including from Intel and we have some improvements. The right click is fixed but opening Chrome or Firefox still freezes. So there is hope!

Version: 1709

Holy hell I think they just fixed it! Got an Intel driver through Windows Update yesterday, and all the stutters are gone, File Explorer opens instantly again, everything is snappy. This is unbelievable, considering how long I've had to deal with this. Thank you Intel.

System: Razer Blade (6700 + 1060).

For my Gigabyte P37XV6 (6700 + 1070) the Intel driver 23.20.16.4973 via Windows Update did not remove the stuttering. It just fixed the right-click lag. (I think another person mentioned that as well)

Reboot and behold.

That's the Intel driver I got. Might have something to do with the Nvidia driver version maybe? I never update gpu drivers myself (cuz they always end up breaking things, even with ddu) and just roll with whatever Windows installed last, in this case 388.73. I don't have GeForce Experience btw.

Also are you saying rebooting will bring everything back? That'd be messed up.

I still havent got an update on intel drivers on Dell Inspiron 7567.

Are you sure it fixes everything? Opening chrome as well?

What version is your intel drivers?

Shak, I've never had any problems opening Chrome (as far as I can tell). The driver version is 23.20.16.4973. It fixed the random stutter that I'd get pretty often for no reason and made File Explorer, Device Manager and all that kinda stuff open much faster (which also had to do with GPU switching).

It even seems to have fixed the random freeze I'd get when entering the first folder on an external HDD (which goes away when I disable the dGPU). Just did a reboot, and everything is still working.

Ok, so i've manually found and force installed the latest Intel driver, which aparently wasn't automatically pushed to my system, on my Dell 7577. One thing that changed - is the right click. Chrome, still stutters and battery icon, etc etc. Hope we get a FULL fix soon. This is really embarasing. No more patience.

Intel display driver through windows update also fixed all of my issues. I have a Gigabyte Aero (7700 + 1070). After all this time, much appreciated. Thanks team.

So, we have now two categories of people.

First: Who received push updates by windows updater, and got all of their issues solved, ex: Gigabyte users

and

Second: Users who didn't receive automatical update, but if they try to force update - they get fixed only the right click stutter. ( ex: dell 7567, 7577 )

Congrats to all users for whom this issue is not anymore an issue!

Now, maybe we, who still encounter it, and didn't receive update for our system, shall wait a bit until we get it also ?

Hope the wait is over for us , too! I very hope so!
