dGPU Switch and Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel CPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070/GT 640M. The problem is, whenever you try to do some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which cause the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

• Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
• Opening Chrome-browser
• Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
• Opening system control panel
• Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
• Loading a new tab in Firefox

• Intel driver
• NVIDIA driver
• Chipset driver
• BIOS
• Firmware

The problem can be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Razer.The problem can be solved by either disabling Intel GPU, which forces the system to always work with NVIDIA, or disabling NVIDIA GPU. Both of them is not an option though, as if you disable Intel, not only you will drain the battery faster, but also some games will stop working. If you disable NVIDIA, then what is the point of buying a laptop with a discrete GPU?There is a also a workaround: configuring https://github.com/jobeid/TrayPwrD3 TrayPwrD3 to always work with NVIDIA in the backgound. This keeps the NVIDIA GPU alive but also drains battery faster. And there is no poaint in that as it renders Optimus useless!So, manufacturers have to come up with a fix.Thank you.

Ok,after alll these days of torture, the best solution is windows 1703 with UAC set to never notify.

My point is, I have the same notebook Lenovo W530 at work, but it does not have those issues with the following setup:

Win 10 Version: 1709 Build 16299.248

Intel Driver Version: 10.18.10.4358

Nvidia Driver Version : 382.05

The Intel driver is somewhat older though. Not sure if it is worth to check that Nvidia driver version with and older Intel driver.

For my Gigabyte P37XV6 I can go back to Intel Driver 15.40.14.4352. I will give it a try in combination with the aforementioned Nvidia driver and report back.

Unfortunately, for my Gigabyte P37XV6 the driver combination I mentioned did not change anything. Seems that the older Intel driver for Lenovo (10.18.10.4358 )came without functionality (or bugs) that newer versions have. 15.40.14.4352 seems to be already "infested" ...

I'm now thinking about getting a cheap Headless Ghost HDMI plug. Found it interesting since people said, that the problem does not come up once a display is connected, in this case a dummy.

I have tried all the solutions told by many many people. I'll try 1703 and finally tell that it does not fix the issue. But I'm really bored. Like really!

1703 have only two regular lags. UAC and once lag on battery icon after reboot.

it's doesn't matter on this windows with driver you using. its not affected to right click and many more lags

I know that tool is free and it's really awesome that it was provided to the public. I'm just curious about alternative possibilities. Should that thingie work as expected I won't depend on maintenance of that TrayPwrD3 tool in case some Windows Update f*** it up, which seems to be worse than a 50:50 chance these days . E.g., should Direct X13 come up, it might cease working. So long

I also noticed that on my Dell 7577, 1703 works best, except UAC screen. But i also noticed one thing- in device manager, with all installed drivers, there are one or two unidentified devices. Which i suppose are somehow detected after some updates. Because on 1709 i dont see that. Other than that, works flawlessly. But again, u have to disable at all - updates and push garbage from Microsoft

if you identify which those deviced are could help troubleshoot the issue. Maybe those 2 are causing the lag. For exampel are intel and nvidia idemtified correctly?

As far as i remember both nVidia and Intel were recognized. Now i'm on 1709 tho. But, i may revert to 1703 soon if this will continue as it is now. And i will make sure to find what is missing.

Installed 17115.1 and it does not fix the issue at all. But I gotta say, I felt just a little less freeze duration. Like 0.3s instead of 0.5s... I would like you to try it.

I have the same probleme with my Lenovo ThinkPad T470p.

Had a good run without any problems on my Inspiron 7577 with GTX 1060 and i7 7700HQ but I can't exactly pinpoint what caused the system to behave normally. I have downloaded TrayPwrD3 but had it off during this time period when the laptop was absolutely fine. GeForce Experience notification icon also pointed the fact that the 1060 graphics card was not active during that time as well.

So how did this happen exactly? No lag on right click, while opening Control Center or anything else on that matter without having the activate the NVidia card or have TrayPwrD3 on at all. I am not sure if any of the Windows updates I had to download before restarting the computer and noticing that the lag is back have anything to do with the problem re-appearing or was it just the fact that I restarted the PC that made it re-appear ...

Is this problem also in a g sync laptop??. Actually i got hands on a alienware 15 r3 . It had no issues like these so i opened up the task manager almost three to four system processes kept pinging the dgpu . So is there a way we can do that?

Kill the processes? Helios 300 is on the list. G-Sync does not solve it AFAIK.
