dGPU Switch and Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel CPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070/GT 640M. The problem is, whenever you try to do some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which cause the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Here is a video demonstrating Display Setting Freeze:

Another video showing dGPU switch on a lot of simple tasks:

Another one:

We have tried updating every software possible, but no luck.

  • NVIDIA driver
  • Chipset driver
  • BIOS
  • Firmware

The problem can be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Razer. The problem can be solved by either disabling Intel GPU, which forces the system to always work with NVIDIA, or disabling NVIDIA GPU. Both of them is not an option though, as if you disable Intel, not only you will drain the battery faster, but also some games will stop working. If you disable NVIDIA, then what is the point of buying a laptop with a discrete GPU?There is a also a workaround: configuring https://github.com/jobeid/TrayPwrD3 TrayPwrD3 to always work with NVIDIA in the backgound. This keeps the NVIDIA GPU alive but also drains battery faster. And there is no poaint in that as it renders Optimus useless! So, manufacturers have to come up with a fix.Thank you.

Hello folks,

Thank you for your patience while we investigated this further. I understand the frustrations caused by this issue and apologize for the inconvenience it may be bringing you. By now, most of you have installed our latest graphics driver (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27650 15.65.5.4982) and seen the right-click desktop issue resolved (and some other right-click stutters as well).

After implementing the code change, we noticed there were some remaining right-click stutters happening in various areas of the OS experience and that's what we've been investigating until now; we wanted to be very clear if we were still contributing to them. We've now concluded that we are not, we're only in the stack 1 millisecond which is acceptable and the remaining time is from other parties and the three others in the stack, to the best of my knowledge are aware, investigating, and treating this with high priority.

This concludes Intel's investigation so I'm now considering this thread closed, though Intel will remain in communication with the other parties to assist in any way we can should they desire.

Special thanks to coolrecep for reporting this and all the others helping with config details and testing so we could improve our drivers as quickly as possible. We value all of your contributions.

.:Bryce:.

I'm already crazy. Please tell me how to stop the Windows Update because as soon as I installed 4973, Windows Update installed some old version from October last year.

That will also block other things that you may want, so you do NOT want to do this.

To block a specific update, use the Windows Show/Hide utility.

Read this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3073930/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-driver-update-from-reinstalling-in-window https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3073930/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-driver-update-from-reinstalling-in-window

Then, download the utility: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f22d5fdb-59cd-4275-8c95-1be17bf70b21/wushowhide.diagcab http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f22d5fdb-59cd-4275-8c95-1be17bf70b21/wushowhide.diagcab

This utility is not very friendly. You will want to use the HIDE function. Use this utility AFTER you install the driver you want. Then, using the Show/Hide utility, HIDE the windows driver you do not want.

You will notice a lot of other drivers that you probably have never seen before. If you want to install those drivers, you can go to the device manager and look for each one, and then update them in the device manager. Some will be VERY difficult to find. This can take almost two hours, depending on how many you want to update.

But, sticking to the problem, use this utility to hide the windows driver you do not want. And, do not disable windows update, especially if you want to get apps from the windows store.

Ok, so according to this:

https://www.computerworld.com/article/3256148/microsoft-windows/microsoft-hints-at-early-april-release-of-windows-10s-next-feature-upgrade.html Microsoft hints at early April release of Windows 10's next feature upgrade | Computerworld

The next version of Windows (1803) will be released on April 3rd or 10th, can't wait, hope they've fixed the problem.

Hello,

I've posted about the contrast issue /message/532243 here. Even though it is not directly associated with the freeze problem, an Intel employee said I should post about the error here, too. So I'll copy my original post here:

I have noticed that when you hover above a HTML5 video (so e.g. video controls are overlayed), the colors of the video change significantly.

The contrast increases by a huge margin.

User parradox has made a video of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-iHe16gEN4 videos changing colors - YouTube He has helped us to tell about it here:

Please take a look at it as the color accuracy is not given like this.

Thanks!

This forum feels like a family, kind of. Makes me curious what we all do for a living. I actually do IT support.

Sometimes I just wanna see what it would be like if we all meet in a physical group setting and talk about how annoying the stuttering is. That would kind of make us feel better I believe.

Anyways, just random thoughts passing time hoping for a surprised fix.

Guys i'm thinking of installing windows 10 1703 March release.

Will it really fix the lag and freeze? I don't mind the UAC lag because i always disable it , but for example is chrome fixed when launched?

What should i do once i install it? If i disable updates , will that mean of course that it won't be able to find the drivers for my devices?

I have Dell Inspiron 7567

but I guess you'll have to download all the drivers from Delle's site and install them manually. If you do not need updates for Windows, then I do not see any problems trying with version 1703. I personally plan to wait for you to know if something will change with the new version of Windows and if there are no improvements I will try to return the laptop to the seller

I have just tried 1703 march on 7567 dell. It works!!

No more lag (except when left click on battery the first time after boot). System feels much much faster and fluent. Windows automatically installed all drivers needed and afterwards i disabled automatic updates from group policy. For now i will stick with this until a fix comes out

I always told about this. 1703 have much less lags it's even possible and its dont need disabling gpus or using s....t programs who will be touch nvidia gpu every 10 seconds. 1703 is best for now.

People who say about 1703 (Build 15063.0) have same lags are not even try it and they all misleading other people.

Here are my findings on windows 1703

- no lag when lauching applciations

- no lag with right click

Cons

- lag sometimes when opening display settings

- lag when left click on battery (first time on boot)

- lag when shutting down

- slow opening of windows explorer (icon on taskbar)

With these cons as well the outdated software i might go back to 1709 windows

No NVIDIA driver can solve this problem. Please stop misinforming people, people! It has nothing to do with NVIDIA. NVIDIA is the first company I've contacted. If they were responsible, they would have come up with a driver by now. I'm sure about that...

After the driver install, there are some processes that keep the dGPU active for a while. Restart, and you are welcome back to nowhere.

Nonsense. Misinforming. Do not charge me.

I made a clean Nivdia Driver installation, including restarts. No short freezes for me, no lags in the games. I worked on excel since 5.30 am (Germany). Before, it always freezes for a second. That was annoying me.

The integrated graphics card is active, not the dedicated. Look to the screenhot.

When I am home from work this evening I will try it on my Acer NITRO with Intel 7300Hq and 1050Ti same BIOS version! I am from Germany too! Maybe I can see a change!
