Hi,
Just to begin with, I'm not looking for troubleshooting advice or working on work arounds. I have access to GPUs from other vendors which aren't giving the same problems so I'm personally fine to skip this.
I am employed by one of the main system integrators within the UK and I am fortunate enough to have the ability to play with lots of different components so I have tried this in several different setups, using Alchemist and Battlemage GPUs and also using CPUs from both Vendors ranging from 9th gen intel, up to 200s (including everything in between) and also several generations using both the AM4 and AM5 sockets. This is also across both Windows 10 and 11 with fresh installs and up to date drivers for their corresponding chipsets.
I've noticed issues since the latest Destiny 2 expansion in which the driver is freezing the game, specifically when going into a menu of sorts. I've not seen this happen during gameplay and doesn't seem related to a specific 'activity' in the game. An educated guess would be that going from gameplay fps to menu fps is quite a leap and sometimes trips the driver up. The only way to resolve the issue is to task manager up and end the task.
Based on all the testing I've done on this, the only thing this could logically be in the Intel driver for the discreet GPUs.
I hope this is enough information, feel free to ask any questions. Is it possible to send this across to the driver development team?

Hi NemolitioN,
Thank you for posting in our Community, and thank you for sharing such a detailed overview of your testing and observations regarding Destiny 2. From what you’ve described, the issue does appear linked to Intel® discrete GPU drivers, particularly during transitions between gameplay and in-game menus. To help us document this thoroughly for our driver development team, may I kindly ask for the following additional information:
- Exact GPU models tested (for both Intel® Alchemist and Battlemage).
- Driver versions where you observed the freezing issue. Did this occur across multiple releases, or only with the latest drivers?
- Game build/expansion version you are currently running (to align with the point where you began noticing the problem).
- Reproduction steps, could you confirm if this happens consistently when opening menus (e.g., inventory, settings, character screen), or only intermittently?
- Logs or crash dumps (if available) – such as Intel® SSU report, graphics event logs, or any Windows reliability monitor entries when the freeze occurs.
Once we have this information, we can formally further investigate the issue.
Have a nice day!
Best regards,
Von M.

Hi Von M,
Thanks for your response.
Had to take some time to go over the answers to your questions.
The discrete GPUs in question I've tested personally have been:
B580
B570
A770 16gb
A770 8gb
A750
A580
Drivers that I have tested:
32.0.101.6972
32.0.101.6989
32.0.101.7028
I've noticed the issues since the Edge of Fate expansion consistently across each update.
For reproduction, it could be done simply by playing the game from an in activity setting and opening the inventory screen at random intervals. I have successfully managed to replicate this in a short time frame in which I have landed in a zone called EDZ. An area accessible to any new starter, and repeatedly come in and out of the inventory and gameplay screen.
In regards to dumps or reports, I'm rather limited, though I've made a fresh SSU report. I've forced the crash to do this again and nothing shows in reliability history as it doesn't generate a typical game crash. The game freezes and you're forced to end task in the task manager. For this reason, it shows as if the game was just manually stopped via end task. The description for this event states "The program destiny2.exe version 39755.0.0.0 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.", of which nothing is highlighted in the prompted area. Within the Event Viewer, this is repeated but seemingly only gives details of the game failing due to ending task rather than a reported driver failure.
I believe that's all the information I'm able to provide from my end in this format. I am more than happy to demonstrate this or walk someone through this should any clarification be required. Assuming my email address is displayed for certain roles such as yourself or a developer, I'm happy to be contacted directly.

Hello NemolitioN,
Thank you for your patience while we’ve been reviewing this issue. I attempted to replicate the problem on my end, but was not able to reproduce the same behavior. To help us investigate further, could you please provide the exact in-game graphics settings you are using when the issue occurs?
In addition, we’d like you to try a clean installation of the graphics driver using the Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) tool, then reinstall the latest driver version which is the 32.0.101.7028. This will ensure that any remnants of old drivers or cached files are completely removed.
Once you’ve completed these steps, please test the game again and let us know if the issue persists. If the behavior continues, we’ll proceed with a more in-depth investigation to identify the root cause.
Thank you again for your cooperation and support in resolving this matter.
Best regards,
Von M.

Hi Von,
The settings used in game are varied during my testing due to testing different cards. The only consistent settings I've been using have been such as turning off VSync, Motion Blur and Wind Impulse whilst additional video is set to 90 render resolution with HDR, Chromatic and Film all off.
It isn't a really easy thing to replicate but it has always been during the transition to a menu screen such as the character screen for example. This could be whilst in a game setting or during the end of a mission where you can see your mission stats and opening the character screen. I've also had some long playthroughs and some shorter playthroughs in which this is happening. Anywhere from 3 minutes to 60 minutes.
I'll plug the intel card back into my main machine and once I have the crash again, I'll start a screen recording in which you'll be able to see the crashed screen, how you have to close the game and opening reliability history so you can get a glimpse of all this.
Note also, I've previously replicated this on fresh installs of Windows in which the fresh install of the intel driver has been the only driver present, both on Win 10 and 11.
When I replicate the issue and start the recording, is there anything else you'd like to see that may help?

Hello NemolitioN,
Thank you for the detailed update and for sharing the settings you’ve tested. I appreciate your plan to capture a screen recording, as it will give us clearer insight. Since you’ve already tested with different GPUs, fresh Windows installs, and Intel drivers only, we’ve ruled out many common causes. Noting that the crash happens during menu transitions is also an important clue. When you’re able to capture the recording, could you also include the following details so we can further investigate:
-
Which specific Intel graphics driver versions did you test with (both current and previous, if any)?
-
If possible, after the crash, could you check Windows Event Viewer for any “Application Error” or “Display Driver” events around the same timestamp and include them? Additionally, if available, please include the dump file, as this will greatly assist in identifying the underlying issue.
Thank you.
Best regards,
Von M.

Hi Von,
Apologies for the delayed response.
The last time I had the crashing issue, the driver I was using was in fact 32.0.101.7026.
When doing the recording, I will be sure to cover the following information you've requested. Using the information you've provided, I'll go through some steps for replication to attempt to generate a dump file too.
I will be dedicating some time to replicate this shortly so I'll get everything across to you as soon as I do.

Hi Von,
I hope you're well.
I've been playing some today without intending to generate the crash and it's happened. I didn't generate a dump file as I wasn't even thinking about it today.
Here's the link to the video: https://youtu.be/tfOgt3C3NfY
It's unlisted on Youtube so please let me know if it shows for you or not.
Additionally, the file I generated previously is still relevant, labelled sys1.
A run down of what happens in the video:
1) Crash happens in game. I finished a pvp game and opened my character screen as previously mentioned.
2) I started OBS to record.
3) I open task manager to show the game with it in the background frozen but still using resources.
4) I open event viewer and open the recent events that pertain to this crash
5) I load the Intel app to show the card and driver version, you'll also see my 12900K
6) I close the game using task manager (I cut the video and started to record again as personal discussions were open)
7) I open reliability history to show the information regarding Destiny crashing.
I hope this information helps. I do still intend to do this deliberately with the process to generate the dump files so I'll get around to that at some point too but this is a starting point highlighting the issue happening when loading the character screen. Besides the dump, was there anything I missed?
