Hi:

As the subject, I got a notification from the IDA, and update it.

After it has done, it just stuck there, and the screen show "Intel NUC" logo and "setup" "BBS" on upper right corner.

Please give some advice to make the NUC back to work, thanks

Hi,

It appears that starting from BIOS version 0060, problem has been reported by users using certain SSD (adata for example). The solution for now is downgrading BIOS to version 0059 using BIOS recovery method.  The problem is with this downgrade that without using certain method, after downgrade, the BIOS will reinstall the version 0061. In order to avoid this problem, after downgrade to version 0059, the security jumper should be installed in locked position (2-3), instead of normal (1-2). The method how to downgrading from Power Button Menu (without need to open NUC and reinstall the jumper), was described by @MSuur  in his post dated 20-04-2020, in this thread.  In case that you don't have the old BIOS file 0059, I'm attaching it to this post.

Edit:

Please describe the model/PN of the SSD installed in your NUC

Hi @CJian29

1. Thank you for opening this new thread.

2. BIOS 0061 is not "broken", at least not the HN0061.BIO file.  I just updated my NUC8i7HVK with this version, using BIOS recovery method from Power Button Menu. I have to admit that I didn't check how the express update (HNKBLi70.86A.0061.EB.msi) works. I'll check this later.

3. Now, I suggest that you try BIOS recovery with the Yellow Security Jumper removed. Before starting this update reset the CMOS. Follow my instructions:

4. Prepare USB stick fully formatted to FAT32 with Bios file HN0061.bio  . Format your USB with Quick Format option unchecked. Do not format your USB in MAC (OS) or Linux machine. Use Windows.

5. Disconnect the power adapter and remove the upper cover and the LED panel from your NUC. Disconnect the LED panel connector before panel removing.

6. Remove the yellow security jumper (see Product Technical Spec, para. 2.2.3.4, page 46 )

7. Disconnect the CMOS Battery Connector and reconnect it after 15 minutes (item F, page 45 in TPS)

8. Insert the USB with the HN0061.bio file into front yellow USB slot.

9. Reconnect the power adapter and power ON the NUC. Wait 30 sec - 2min. The Recovery process will start automatically and will end after 2 -5 minutes.

10. When bios recovery is completed, switch the power OFF, remove the power adapter and replace the Security Jumper (pins 1-2) . Reinstall the LED panel and the upper cover.

11. Power your NUC ON.

12. Enter Bios setting by pressing F2 during boot process.

13. Press F9(followed by "Y"), to set Bios to default settings. Press F10 (followed by "Y"), to save the settings and exit to O.S. Let the NUC fully reboot.

14.If before update, you have customized bios settings, you can enter again to Bios setting to change the necessary settings.

Hi,

Tried and stuck at step 9, it does not start recovery automatically.

It just displays the menu as the attachment shows.

Then how to deal with that?

Hi @CJian29

1. In case that NUC after powering ON with Security Jumper removed is not finding valid BIOS file it is booting into Configuration Menu. However, the Configuration Menu look slightly different  than your image. It should be like on the attached image to this post.

2. Any way, is you ISB Fully formatted in Windows to FAT 32? Try to insert this USB into rear USB slot and power your NUC again.

3. If you reach again this men (it is similar to Power Button Menu), click on F4 to start the recovery process.

Already format it with FAT32, and put the necessary file there.

I also expect some menu like you but seems I am not lucky.

If I press F4, it just seems to do nothing and after a reboot, the issue is still there.

I will give a try with the rear USB port.

Hi,

Tried the solution exactly as instructed. Tried every port on the NUC. Nothing. Same as @CJian29. Always gets stuck on the bios screen with Setup and BBS in the top right corner.

Tried the power menu, F4. Nothing happens. Screen just stays off while the machine is one (left it for almost 30 mins and reset to see if I could access the bios!)

Stuck!

Found a historic thread https://community.intel.com/t5/Intel-NUCs/NUC7i3BNK-Bios-0070-Update-Fails/m-p/430680

That's also the issue which IDA push wrong updates to customers, but at that time the steps works.

Interesting. So not the first time Intel have made this mistake.

For me atleast, and you by the sounds of it, the steps do not work with this issue.

I am going to call Intel when the support opens. Hope they have a solution!

Of course, I will let you know what the outcome is.

Now I need carefully go through the TechProdSpec doc to find if there are some hints for this.

I really hope this is not a warrenty return/fix. I will have to send my machine from the UAE to the USA!

Also hoping that @LeonWaksman maybe has some other suggestions!

Regardless, I will let you know what Intel phone support suggest when they open.

I understand that the BIOS recovery is not working. I've informed Intel Support about this problem We need wait and see if their is other possibility to help, except the RMA.

@CJian29  did you disconnect the CMOS battery connector for 15 minutes (para. 7 in my instructions)?

Hi:

Finally it works with HN0059.

@LeonWaksman Before your thread, I already found that the SSD may impact something since my SSD is really hot but the SSD LED is not on.

So I remove all my SSDs from the slot and retry with the BIOS recovery method(without BIOS security jumper).

For the first time with 0061, it goes into the power menu, then I press F7, it started to do the recovery process, and it just shows complete after couples seconds. Then I power off and unplug the AC adapter, reinstalled the security jumper to 1-2 pins, and try to boot, but seems like not work since the Hades keep rebooting.

Then I tried the second time with 0061(with security jumper removed again), then as expected, it goes into BIOS recovery progress, and prompt complete on the screen. Then I power off and unplug the AC adapter again and then add the security jumper back to 1-2 pins. Then plug AC adapter and try boot without disks. And after several seconds,  it shows something like "No bootable media detected", so I think it's time to add the SSDs back.

After adding SSDs back and try to boot, it boots well and goes into windows. Then I think the issue is resolved, so I add the skull LED and cover back. But unfortunately, it boot failed again after I assemble all things together.

Then I come to your thread with 0059. I removed the security jumper and boot with a USB with 0059. It goes just as 0061 did and goes into BIOS downgrading after press F7 in the power menu. All things work smoothly and complete the downgrading from 0061 to 0059. Then I replace the security jumper to 2-3 pins.

Then I tried the reboot several times to see if there are some potential issues, all work well.

Just write down my journey here to help others if helps.

And attach 2 images, one is recovery to 0061, and one is recovery to 0059.

Best regards

You guys saved me. I was having the EXACT same issue. I was losing my mind all weekend.

Downgrading to version 59, and removing SSDs while doing the boot recovery were the key. It works! Thank you both!

Obviously I have the Hades Canyon HVK w/ 8809G.

For SSDs, I have:

Samsung SSD 960 Evo 1TB

and

Intel SSD PEKKW256G7

This answer worked well for me.  I recovered to BIOS 059 using the security jumper method and can now boot my systems into Windows.  I have a Intel Optane 880p M2 drive.  Strange that Intel would create such a problem for themselves.

One issue I do have is that when I boot the system normally it re-updates the BIOS to 061.  I have to then recover to 059 to make the system useful.  Does anyone know where the update is hidden?  It appears to be in the BIOS since the system never gets into Windows before the automatic update.  I've looked around in the Visual BIOS but don't see any setting that will turn off the automatic update.  Anyone have an idea?

Thanks

The answer is in the post immediately above yours from @MRoss5200

"if you look in the Device Manager, under "System Firmware", BIOS 0061 shows with a yellow bang. Uninstalling the driver and deleting the installed files with the checkbox will prevent the system from trying to reinstall the BIOS again on reboot"

Thanks @CJian29@LeonWaksman

I too went through several hoops and hurdles after I upgraded my NUC-Mini to BIOS61.

Your guidance was crucial to the recovery of my system by reverting to BIOS59; and I did not need to open the computer at all or mess around with the jumper.

Great job fellas and thanks!
