Intel Wi-fi 6 AX201 adapter not found on Ubuntu 20.04 OR Kali Linux

I was having issues with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. I could not connect to the internet. The only way I was able was through connecting my phone to my laptop so that my laptop could share off the wifi. When I looked at the wifi menu in settings, the menu would say something like, "Adapter not found".

SOOOO....

I decided to try Kali. I was eventually able to get Kali up and working, but same exact deal as Ubuntu.

I'm assuming that this is happening across both OSs because they both run off of Debian. I've also done some digging through other posts on this very topic and it appears that this is the problem. I've tried following dozens of posts, but none of them have worked.

I think that because the Intel Wi-fi 6 AX201 is relatively new, Ubuntu and others have not yet built native support for it.

When will native Wi-fi 6 AX201 compatibility come to Ubuntu?

Will anyone please walk me through on how I can get these two pieces of technology to work, Ubuntu 20.04, and Intel Wi-fi 6 AX201?

Hello Harrison_m_h,

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

In order to better assist you, please provide the following:

1. The brand and model number of your system. You can also provide the Intel® System Support Utility for the Linux* Operating System for more details: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26735/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-the-Linux-Operating-System

2. Is this the original adapter that came pre-installed on your computer or did you change/install the adapter to this one?

3. Is the issue recent? Did you notice the issue after a system update?

4. Is the Bluetooth working?

5. Is this a laptop or desktop computer?

6. Run the following commands and send us the outcome:

· modinfo iwlwifi > If there is no output, then the module isn’t installed this is the distribution installation issue.

· lsmod | grep iwlwifi > If the result is empty, the driver hasn't been loaded. Most likely to be a distribution issue.

· To verify, please type: dmesg | grep iwlwifi > If the result is empty, the driver wasn’t initialized and this is a distribution issue. If there is a result populated, proceed with the next step.

· dmesg | grep “no suitable firmware found!” > If the result is not empty, it means you don't have a suitable FW (API mentioned in the dmesg).

· Please visit here: https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi for supported FW, or here https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/ for the latest versions.

7. If the above steps don't work, collect the debug data:

Type: dmesg | grep ASSERT

If the output is empty, please follow this wiki: https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi/debugging to extract dmesg and trace-cmd.

If the output has value, please collect it from the wiki FW dump too.

Hello Harrison_m_h,

I would like to let you know that the drivers are part of the upstream Linux* kernel. They're available through the regular channels, distributions, or the Linux* kernel archives. We support the use of the drivers only in the kernel version the driver was a part of.

I recommend you to check on the Linux forums for further support. Also, you may find the following links helpful:

I will close this inquiry. If you need further assistance or if you have additional questions, please create a new thread and we will gladly assist you.

Best regards,
