dGPU Switch and Freeze Problem

Hi,

there is a problem with laptops which have Intel CPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070/GT 640M. The problem is, whenever you try to do some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.

Some actions, which cause the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:

  • Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
  • Opening Chrome-browser
  • Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
  • Opening system control panel
  • Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
  • Loading a new tab in Firefox

Here is a video demonstrating Display Setting Freeze:

Another video showing dGPU switch on a lot of simple tasks:

Another one:

We have tried updating every software possible, but no luck.

The problem can be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Razer. The problem can be solved by either disabling Intel GPU, which forces the system to always work with NVIDIA, or disabling NVIDIA GPU. Both of them is not an option though, as if you disable Intel, not only you will drain the battery faster, but also some games will stop working. If you disable NVIDIA, then what is the point of buying a laptop with a discrete GPU?There is a also a workaround: configuring https://github.com/jobeid/TrayPwrD3 TrayPwrD3 to always work with NVIDIA in the backgound. This keeps the NVIDIA GPU alive but also drains battery faster. And there is no poaint in that as it renders Optimus useless! So, manufacturers have to come up with a fix.Thank you.

Hello folks,

Thank you for your patience while we investigated this further. I understand the frustrations caused by this issue and apologize for the inconvenience it may be bringing you. By now, most of you have installed our latest graphics driver (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27650 15.65.5.4982) and seen the right-click desktop issue resolved (and some other right-click stutters as well).

After implementing the code change, we noticed there were some remaining right-click stutters happening in various areas of the OS experience and that's what we've been investigating until now; we wanted to be very clear if we were still contributing to them. We've now concluded that we are not, we're only in the stack 1 millisecond which is acceptable and the remaining time is from other parties and the three others in the stack, to the best of my knowledge are aware, investigating, and treating this with high priority.

This concludes Intel's investigation so I'm now considering this thread closed, though Intel will remain in communication with the other parties to assist in any way we can should they desire.

Special thanks to coolrecep for reporting this and all the others helping with config details and testing so we could improve our drivers as quickly as possible. We value all of your contributions.

.:Bryce:.

I tried much of several driver combination and updatet Windows to the latest build. Nothing changed the problem. The only solution for now is to let the dGPU in idle with this little programm: TrayPwr3D. Then it runs all very smooth. I hope they will fix this, in the next Update.

Last night I connected my laptop to an external monitor using an HDMI cable and the stuttering stopped. Some apps like Nvidia share were using the dGpu but what's weird is that after I disconnected it and made sure that nothing is using the dGpu ,the stuttering didn't come back... Until I restarted my laptop that is.

Anyone has any idea why?

Laptop is Acer Predator Helios 300

I can confirm this, i tried it with a second monitor on my Acer too and disconected, and yes the stuttering is gone. After a new Start it is back! This is annouying!

So many members in this thread have been complaining about microstutters, or freezes that last less than a second. Is anyone also experiencing complete computer crashes?

Specifically; I am on a Dell Inspiron 15 Gaming (7577 with 1060 Max-Q and 7300HQ), and I experience these same microstutters, but I am also experiencing crashing.

What happens: after 10-15 minutes of normal browsing, I experience graphic artifacts (including image ghosting, static lines, etc), while it simultaneously freezes. Then, after a few seconds, it crashes to a completely black screen. This does not happen if I disable one of the GPUs, or provide the other fixes members have also suggested.

Hm, not crashes...but..

"after 10-15 minutes of normal browsing, I experience graphic artifacts (including image ghosting, static lines, etc), while it simultaneously freezes. "

Well, sometimes from 10sec - to 1 min,,"graphic artifacts". + "it simultaneously freezes". Only a few "Esc"'s helps...but no a crashes...or black screen or bsod. If i'm not mistake, it was before dGPU idle programm.

This is just me guessing, but wouldn't a workaround revolving around the HDMI thing be better than the 2 we have now in terms of power saving ?

I'm currently using bye Optimus and battery life is severly reduced when I disable the dGpu.

I don't code btw so I can't do it myself. Don't even know if it can actually be done .

Yep, turns out disabling the GPU keeps keeps it still on which was also surprising to me at the time. So when on battery it's best to leave it enabled and have Optimus freeze Windows every so often

I have decided to create an account here because of the same problem. I made a video with the open task manager and the simple right click activates the GPU. Is this the cause of the problem?

Seems to be a global Problem that concerns the most Notebooks having similar configurations. This seems to be also similar to the microstutters of SLI Systems. Intel is there a chance to get a Hotfix for this? Or are all software developers busy with microcoding CPU´s for Spectre?

Dear Intel Team,

Requesting you to please prioritise the Issue and assign a resource to look into this and resolve it once and for all.

Please do revert, when can we expect a reply with solution instead of workaround for this issue.

I cant understand thoses problems at the biggest computer chip producer on this planet are happen such a long time ...

I got a Y720 with the HD630 and a GTX 1060 and the same issue ... i sent my notebook back to the distributor because its annoying to work with such crapy hardware.

Im done with intel ... AMD got they stuff much more better to be done
