Hi,
there is a problem with laptops which have Intel CPU + GTX 1050/1050Ti/1060/1070/GT 640M. The problem is, whenever you try to do some action on the OS, discrete GPU is triggered and it causes a 0.5s freeze.
Some actions, which cause the dGPU to wake up and lock up the whole system for about 0,5 seconds are:
- Left click on battery-icon in task-bar
- Opening Chrome-browser
- Opening Windows Image Viewer (app + classic Foto viewer)
- Opening system control panel
- Provocation any animation on task bar (e.g. thumbnail-preview, ...)
- Loading a new tab in Firefox
Here is a video demonstrating Display Setting Freeze:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7K1SpCQgAY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7K1SpCQgAY
Another video showing dGPU switch on a lot of simple tasks:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-euiZmHZwlc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-euiZmHZwlc
Another one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txQZWfWFhlc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txQZWfWFhlc
We have tried updating every software possible, but no luck.
- Intel driver
- NVIDIA driver
- Chipset driver
- BIOS
- Firmware
The problem can be found on all laptop brands: ASUS, Acer, Clevo, Dell, Gigabyte, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Razer. The problem can be solved by either disabling Intel GPU, which forces the system to always work with NVIDIA, or disabling NVIDIA GPU. Both of them is not an option though, as if you disable Intel, not only you will drain the battery faster, but also some games will stop working. If you disable NVIDIA, then what is the point of buying a laptop with a discrete GPU?There is a also a workaround: configuring https://github.com/jobeid/TrayPwrD3 TrayPwrD3 to always work with NVIDIA in the backgound. This keeps the NVIDIA GPU alive but also drains battery faster. And there is no poaint in that as it renders Optimus useless! So, manufacturers have to come up with a fix.Thank you.

Hello folks,
Thank you for your patience while we investigated this further. I understand the frustrations caused by this issue and apologize for the inconvenience it may be bringing you. By now, most of you have installed our latest graphics driver (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27650 15.65.5.4982) and seen the right-click desktop issue resolved (and some other right-click stutters as well).
After implementing the code change, we noticed there were some remaining right-click stutters happening in various areas of the OS experience and that's what we've been investigating until now; we wanted to be very clear if we were still contributing to them. We've now concluded that we are not, we're only in the stack 1 millisecond which is acceptable and the remaining time is from other parties and the three others in the stack, to the best of my knowledge are aware, investigating, and treating this with high priority.
This concludes Intel's investigation so I'm now considering this thread closed, though Intel will remain in communication with the other parties to assist in any way we can should they desire.
Special thanks to coolrecep for reporting this and all the others helping with config details and testing so we could improve our drivers as quickly as possible. We value all of your contributions.
.:Bryce:.

Sean, three posts in less than twelve hours, on a weekend, is not going to find an answer or get you a fix.
Read post # 175 in this thread, AND BE PATIENT. Nothing is going to be fixed this weekend, so save yourself some time.

Agreed, this is not gonna happen now, just deal with it. You'll have to wait for the next version of Windows which is Spring Creators Update for this to be fixed

I don't think it's even gonna happen with the Spring update, considering it's existed since the very beginning of Windows 10. And that was how many updates ago? 4? Yeah I'm not too optimistic anymore. I hope I'm wrong though. This just goes to show how damn incompetent Nvidia and Microsoft are at fixing these.

I suspect it won't be fixed with this generation of GPUs.

bnasty5 this bug appeared after Windows Fall update, before that there was no such a problem. I suppose it is not a hardware problem Intel, Microsoft or Nvidia can resolve it.

Razer Blade 14" 6700 + 1060. Same issue, from the very first day I got it (and that was back in the Anniversary Update days). Optimus is such a total piece of crap, I can't even. I don't remember having this many issues with my Intel + Radeon laptop, even though AMD were the ones accused of making bad drivers. Obviously Nvidia are much worse..

I've gone through 21 pages and updated the first post with all the reported models so far...
Lately, I've uninstalled Windows Insider build and installed a fresh 1709 and realized that 1709 RTM freezes a lot more!
If someone can install a fresh 1703 and then disable updates, install drivers and test, that would be awesome. As this was reported to be problem-free.
I really believe that this issue belongs to Microsoft somehow... Hopefully we will get a proper update from Intel this week.

I agree with you. I think this is Microsoft's fault and Intel is just waiting the new creators update in March/April.

I don't think RS4 will fix the problem. It's in the last stages and all of the builds so far did not fix the issue.

Coolrecep:
I am responding to your post 315. Like I said: When I bought my Acer Helios 300 17.3" laptop, it came with version 1703. I did not experience stutter or any other of that nature. It was completely smoothed. Only until I installed 1709, the stutter started to exist.
I then even did a fresh OS install without Acer recovery with Acer's driver and no stutter.
I also did a fresh OS install with just Microsoft update using device manager and checking for update. No stutter.
I then proceed to install the 1709, and the stutter started to occur.
Sure, other says the 1703 still caused the stutter. But for me, it did not.
I do believe it could be Microsoft's issue. I'm sure if it's Apple OS, they will address the patch for their OS testing with Intel drivers and what not.
I even mentioned in on my post earlier back on December 16th in this forum:
/message/514609# 514609 71. /message/514609# 514609 Re: Right Click Freeze Problem
ifotted Dec 16, 2017 4:11 PM (/message/505338# 505338 in response to coolrecep)
This is an issue with Windows Fall Creator 1709.
Downgrading to 1703 works and no lag or stutter.
I have tested every possible solution and workaround. Using Fall Creator 1703 does not cause issue. Fall Creator 1709 is the culprit.
If Intel can debug and compare 1703 and 1709, that would be helpful!

Same problem with the ACER PREDATOR HELIOS 300 (Predator PH317-51) Intel HD630 and 1050Ti. Many lags and freezes.I searched for solutions all week, then I found this thread. Thanks. It is definitely a problem of the integrated and dedicated graphics cards. If I select the dedicated graphics card in the NVidia Control Panel, then the problems are less. But even in games I still have some lags and freezes.
Come on Intel, Nvidia or Microsoft. We need a solution.

Installiere dir TrayPwr3d vorübergehend, mein Acer macht die selben Probleme. Den leicht höheren Stromverbrauch kann ich persönlich verschmerzen! Hoffen wir das Intel bzw. MS das Problem m bald lösen!
Install Tray Power3d. My Acer has this Problem too. Let us hope Intel/MS will fix this soon!

Danke für den Tipp.
Hatte ich gestern versucht aber
Windows Defender hatte die Installation verwehrt, wahrscheinlich muss ich ihn ausstellen oder sie Datei als ungefährlich markieren.
Ich probiere es gleich heute aus.

Hi,
I like report anothers problem with sound and video in my laptop MSI GE73VR 7RE.
When i play game that game use Intel HD, the Speakers make a Noise like a Distortion and the sreen Blinking indifferently, when i see movie its happens to, but if i change for NVIDIA ONLY nothing happens and the freeze problems dont happens to.
It is required to fix not only the freeze problems, i send my laptop for manufacturer 4 times and they tested all hardware and report that was not the hardware but software.
Seriously we need a big fix and and big update that comes PERFECT for ALL this problems.
Thanks.

I can confirm that Gigabyte P35 v6 has exactly the same problems. Tried it via two retailers in two different regions and those issues persists. The latest build of Windows 10 makes things worse.

I see a new Windows Preview has been released, 17115, can anyone confirm if this build fixes the issue as it wasn't on Microsoft's list of fixed issues. I also understand that installing you favorite Linux distribution also fixes the issue when using Bumblebee, LOL.
