5120x1440 resolution and ambiguities in the documentation

In the middle of the previous decade, buyers of new Intel Core processors quite timely received the opportunity to connect the appeared 5K displays to the built-in graphics in them.

HD resolutions of 2560x1440 (16:9), 2560x1600 (16:10) are the maximum in HD for a frequency of 60 Hz with a maximum of HD at 120 Hz.
( DVI Max Dual link: 2560 × 1600 (WQXGA) @ 60 Hz )
Higher resolutions formed on the basis of this value with subsequent technological development and doubling of interface bandwidth in Intel Core 4th Generation 4K at 60 Hz lead to 5120x1440 at 60 Hz in Intel Core 7th Generation and are called 5K. Further doubling of the interface speed in Intel Core 11th allows you to achieve 5K at 100-120 Hz.

A person is completely accustomed to looking left-right and side vision, the movement of the eyes and head in these directions is faster.
and 5120 x 1440 - even easier than 4K (469.000000 MHz compared to 4K Pixel Clock: 594MHz)
High resolution is associated with memory consumption, including remembering the state of windows - in early Windows, the redrawing of windows was carried out every time by the programs themselves and it is clear how much more it is at a higher resolution of 8K.

Hello JKoz, I just received an update on this matter.

Just to let you know, when using USB Type C the video protocol used is DisplayPort, and as per ark, the maximum resolution supported via DP is 4096x2304@60Hz

https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/124968/intel-core-i7-8650u-processor-8m-cache-u...

What this means is that the laptop manufacturer has implemented customizations in hardware that would need custom software for them to work properly. We suggest reporting this issue directly to your laptop manufacturer to get a new customized driver for your laptop.

Any questions, please let me know.

Before it worked perfect running 5120x1440 with USB-C- Then Windows10 was upgraded & Intel drivers, and then I could not use 5120x1440. any longer.

Downloaded old driver, (intel_vga_26.20.100.7262), and now I can chose the higher 5120x1440 again!!

The HDMI interface supports HDMI with 3D, 4K, Deep Color, and x.v.Color. The DisplayPort interface supports the VESA DisplayPort Standard Version 1, Revision 2.

Each digital port is capable of driving resolutions up to 3840x2160 at 60Hz
through DisplayPort and 4096x2304 at 24 Hz/2560x1600 at 60 Hz using HDMI.

The processor is designed in accordance with the VESA DisplayPort Standard Version
1.2a. The processor supports VESA DisplayPort PHY Compliance Test Specification 1.2a and VESA
DisplayPort Link Layer Compliance Test Specification 1.2a.

The processor HDMI interface is designed in accordance with High-Definition Multimedia Interface with 3D, 4K, Deep Color, and x.v.Color.

Keep in mind Table 9. Valid Three Display Configurations through the Processor

and Table 10. DisplayPort and embedded DisplayPort Resolutions for 1,2,4 Lanes - Link
Data rate of RBR, HBR, and HBR2

Table 9, Notes 1. Requires support of 2 channel DDR3/DDR3L 1600 MT/s confuguration for driving 3 simultaneous
3840x2160 @ 60 Hz display resolutions.

It is very important to note from the outset that the resolution depends, in addition to the graphics of the processor, on the speed of the memory modules used and the number of memory channels, which can affect the resolution parameters of such fully finished systems as laptops and tablets.

It's a modern fully perfect form of this
"Resolution support is subject to memory BW (bandwidth) availability."

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/212277/intel-core-i511500-processor-12m-cache-up-to-4-60-ghz/specifications.html

"Intel® Iris® Xe Graphics only: to use the Intel® Iris® Xe brand, the system must be populated with 128-bit (dual channel) memory. Otherwise, use the Intel® UHD brand."

The IGCC report in the "memory" section contains detailed information about the memory configuration and the memory modules themselves from the SPD.

Still, in this case, more information about 4K is in https://ark.intel.com.

These specifications truly reveal a very interesting variety of resolutions in 4K.

Core 5th Generation

The HDMI interface supports HDMI with 3D, 4K, Deep Color, and x.v.Color. The DisplayPort interface supports the VESA DisplayPort Standard Version 1, Revision 2.

Each digital port is capable of driving resolutions up to 3840x2160 at 60Hz using
4 lanes at link data rate HBR2 through DisplayPort and 4096x2304 at 24 Hz using HDMI.
Use of active level shifter is required to obtain maximum HDMI resolution

There were such powerful concepts as

DP++

DP Type-C

LS-Pcon

HDMI 2.0 4096 x 2160 @ 60 Hz

MST

DP 4096 x 2304 @ 60 Hz

2.5 Display Interfaces

Each DDI can support dual mode (DP++)

Note:
The processor platform supports DP Type-C implementation with additional discrete components.

Table 2-16. Display Technologies Support

...

Notes:
1. HDMI 2.0 support is possible using LS-Pcon converter chip connected to the DP port. The LS-Pcon
supports 2 modes:
a. Level shifter for HDMI 1.4 resolution
b. DP-HDMI 2.0 protocol converter for HDMI 2.0 resolution.

The HDMI interface supports HDMI with 3D, 4Kx2K @24 Hz, Deep Color, and x.v.Color.

The processor supports Multi-Stream Transport (MST), enabling multiple monitors to be used via single
DisplayPort Connector.

HDMI 2.0 (Via LS-PCon) 4096x2160 # 60Hz, 24bpp

Notes:

6. Supporting 4K display required two DDR chaannels of same size. Performance degradations exists in SKL
platforms while running 4K content foe syastem using single channel system memory (compared to using
dual channel).

I wanted to share some positive findings:

I am owning an i5-8400 (2018, onboard intel 630 GPU) and wanted to connect to a 49" TFT LG49WQ95(C/X) with resolution 5120x1440Unfortunately, by default, the max selectable by default was only 3840x2160 in Windows 11.
The most recent intel display driver (31.0.101.2125) that I tried, did not fix the problem to unlock this resolution. I needed to manually add registry keys in addition (not sure, if you really need both):
;-----------------
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000]
"Enable5kModeSupport"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0001]
"Enable5kModeSupport"=dword:00000001
;-----------------
;References:
;https://www.dell.com/community/Monitors/U4919DW-stuck-at-3840x1080-after-Windows-update/td-p/7732013

Additionally I need to use HDMI on the monitor side, as all the Displayport ports on the monitor side are already in use.
In my special corner case, I now can use 5120x1440@71,98 Hz (8bit per color) via HDMI (!) on a i5-8400 on a Gigabyte z370 Wifi mainboard, as this board has 2x HDMI out ports and one of those 2 HDMI out ports of the mainboard is connected to the Displayport output of the intel 630 onboard GPU via a 3rd party HDMI2.0 signal converter chip on the mainboard.
Most other intel-mainboards of intel generation 8-12 do not have such a DP-to-HDMI-chip, but likely will still support 5120x1440 resolution via native displayport, if there is a displayport out port available on the mainboard (As the built in HDMI out ability of 630 is HDMI 1.4 only, which is not sufficient for 5120x1440).
Some later intel generations seem to have HDMI2.0, so maybe those also support 5120x1440 natively via HDMI.

Maybe an active (!) DP-to-HDMI adapter cable might also help on the older intel generations, in case HDMI is needed.

So do not get discouraged by the official documentation of said limitations of 4096 x 2304, if may actually work.

According to the docs all intel gen with HDMI2.0 (including gen 13) are still said to have a max of 4096 vertical pixels. Would be nice to know, if those actually do support a 5120x1440 without going over displayport and an active DP-to-HDMI adapter.
